about tarot readings

Soul v. Ego. Who will win?

People tend to come for readings when they are feeling stuck or don’t know what direction to take.  They may want to make a career change, find a relationship or become more spiritual but don’t know how to make it happen.  So they come for a reading. Often, the problem they are facing is because their Soul (or Higher Self) wants one thing and their Ego (the lower self) wants another.  Your soul will always try to move you in the direction of your highest good and the most growth.  Conversely, the Ego wants to keep you stuck in the status quo or keep you under it’s thumb by convincing you that you need to have more, be more and do more. Nothing is ever enough for the Ego. If you’ve ever experienced opening a packet of Tim Tams and not being able to have just one, you’ve experienced the strength the Ego has over you. You could say that the Soul and the Ego battle tirelessly for supremacy over your life. Sometimes Soul choices are harder because growth can be hard. If you’ve ever tried to have some self-discipline or will-power, you know exactly what I mean. It really is a battleground sometimes. Who will win? The ‘Angel’ or the ‘Devil’ on your shoulder?

Vicky has a fight with her husband and is left feeling angry and disempowered. Her Ego will whisper in her ear to go buy a new outfit, or have a few drinks, or go through McDonald’s drive through because it will soothe the Ego and make her feel better for a little while. The Ego wants instant gratification and hates waiting. Meanwhile, her Soul encourages her to go into the pain, make friends with it and transform it into Light. Perhaps Vicky is continuing a pattern from her childhood, one in which she was invalidated or ignored by a parent. Or perhaps she has never learned to stand up for herself and negotiate effectively through conflict. These are the kind of lessons our Soul tries to teach us. Your Soul is the part of you that is beyond the physical existence, the part that is immortal and eternal and is your connection to the Divine, to the All. Tarot taps into that part of you and that’s why it can be hard sometimes to hear the truth of a reading – the Ego is busy trying to maintain the upper hand. However if we remain open and hold the intention to listen with our heart and be guided by our Soul, Tarot has an almost magical ability to reveal our innermost desires and the next step in our path.

Why didn’t my reading come true?

Someone recently left a comment and I deleted it along with a bunch of spam - sorry, whoever you were!

The person said that I did a reading for them some time ago and a number of things I had predicted had occurred, but two things hadn’t - specifically a relationship and a change in her work situation. She asked why these things hadn’t come to pass yet when I had been right about other things.

I thought about this and my absolutely honest answer is “I don’t know.” Read more »

What are your views on doing readings for yourself? - Vicky

Hi Vicky,

Good question.  I think that ultimately, we all need to be able to read for ourselves.  When I’m upset or very emotional, it’s hard for me to make heads or tails of what I am seeing.  If I have a big decision to make or I feel there is something I need to know, but I just don’t know what, then I might go and have a reading with someone else.

When I read for myself, I take it just as seriously as I would if I was reading for someone else.  I get clear in my mind about the question I want to ask, shuffle and lay out the cards and then ponder the cards that have come out.

Sure, back in the day I used to just keep shuffling and dealing until I got cards I liked, but what I really want is honesty, not just a happy ending.

Reading for yourself is a great way to learn the cards.  You could do a three card spread each day - just shuffle the cards, split them or spread them any way you like to see what three you get.

Keep a tarot journal and write in it each day the cards you got and what your impressions of it are, how you feel about it, and what you think about it.

No need to write volumes and don’t censor yourself.  There is no right or wrong and no one will see your jouranl except you.

Another good idea is to print up a list of the names of all the cards and each day, place a tick next to the ones you pulled out.  Over time you will see a pattern of the cards you repeatedly get.  The cards you DON’T get are significant too.

Can I see the Tarot Reader, please?

Here is a transcript of an actual conversation I just had. I have variations on this a dozen times a day.

“I’d like to see the Tarot Reader please.”

“Ok. The next appointment is available at 3.45.”

“Isn’t there anything sooner?”

“No, I’m sorry, she’s booked up until then.”

“Oh, so she’s here then?”

“Yes she is, she’s just doing other readings up until 3.45.”

“So I can’t have anything before then?”

“No, I’m sorry. The next available spot is 3.45.”

“Oh. So that’s the earliest time I can see her?”

“Yes it is, would you like to book in for 3.45?”

“Is there anything before that?”

“No, sorry, nothing before 3.45.”

“Oh, I’ll have to come another time.”

“Ok. No problem.”
